The search for a new emplacement for the breakwater designed
to protect Qaitbay Fort led us to explore a zone to the north of the Eastern
Harbour. There we discovered the traces of a series of Greek and Roman
shipwrecks representing a time scale from the 4th century AD to the 6th
AD. These present a new source of information on the history of commerce
between Alexandria and the Mediterranean world. In addition, since 1988,
more than 50 anchors of all eras have been attested and mapped.
