Born in 1952. Studied Classics at the University of Paris-IV
Sorbonne (DEA, CAPES, Agrégation des Lettres, 1975, PhD in archaeology,
1977).
1976-1978 - Lecturer in linguistics at the University
of Cairo; first contacts with Alexandria.
1978-1990 - Fellow, then General Secretary of the French
Archaeological School of Athens. Directed underwater excavations in Greece
and Cyprus, land excavations in Turkey, continued contact with Alexandria
and formation of a small team researching the ancient city.
From 1990 - Director of Research with the Centre National
de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), director of the Centre d'Etudes Alexandrines
(permanent CNRS mission founded in Alexandria to promote studies and excavations
of the city).
