This volume gathers together a series of articles dedicated to ancient Alexandria. It begins with an overview of the work undertaken by the CEA between 1992 and 1997 and with the presentation of Pharaonic blocks re-employed in Alexandria. A new hypothesis is put forward for the line of the Heptastadion, the causeway that linked the isle of Pharos with the mainland. Excavations of the Egyptian antiquities service have uncovered tombs with original decorations in the eastern necropolis of Alexandria as well as rarely found artefacts: cinerary urns still closed with their plaster stopper bearing the mark of a seal, and moulds for terra cotta figurines. Three articles cover the salvage dig on the site of the former Theatre Diana with the publication of the very beautiful Medusa mosaic that was found in the dining room of a large 2nd century AD house, and the publication of the ensembles of ceramics from the early and late Roman periods. The volume ends with a presentation of lamps, amongst which one can recognise the figure of Osiris mummified. | |||||
