The initial results of the salvage excavation undertaken on a part of the western Necropolis are presented here. Through the presentation of four tombs, this volume attempts to reconstitute the life of the necropolis in a global fashion and includes complementary studies that go beyond mere considerations of architecture or the remarkable artefacts discovered. The dynamic of the successive transformations of the tombs is explored as are the ensemble of decorations and inscriptions, in addition to the different categories of material (ceramics, amphoras, terra cottas, lamps and glass). The work of the anthropologists was not simply confined to an analysis of the bones but also looked as closely as possible at the very funerary acts and thus the rituals attached to both burial and cremation. |
