TOPOGRAPHY - research

Photogrammetry

The third research topic is the development of a rapid and practical method of mapping by photogrammetry that can be applied to archaeology. The creation of a digital phototheodolite (a good quality digital camera coupled to an electronic tacheometer and connected to a portable computer) allows the topographer to take the data collected (photos and measurements) and draw directly onto the computer. This method is considerably swifter than the traditional approach (site drawing on calque paper cleaned up in the office and then digitised) and as such is much appreciated during urgent salvage excavations.
